Job Summary

The Navigate Hub for Exploring Students at the University of Utah promotes a transformative undergraduate experience by advocating for and empowering undeclared students as they explore, decide, and declare majors aligned with their academic and professional goals. We serve as the academic home for undeclared students.

The Front Line Advising Team aims to provide high quality advising to every undeclared student and empower them with the knowledge and confidence to create a unique undergraduate journey, and ultimately, identify a major to progress towards graduation. Exploration Advisors will be fully trained in all areas of exploratory advising, particularly students in their first year of study, students experiencing academic difficulty and/or not making progress to degree.
These advisors will support the work of the Navigate Hub for Exploring Students by fostering strong relationships with campus and college partners, serving as General Education Liaisons, and advocating for undeclared students through assigned committees. Exploration Advisors serve as curricular experts with deep knowledge of General Education and Baccalaureate Degree Requirements and will be trained on introductory coursework for all majors.

Responsibilities
  1. Advises undeclared undergraduate students in areas including major exploration and decision-making, academic standards, milestone advising, transfer and new student orientation, and university policies
  2. Facilitates students' academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans.
  3. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with learning differences, specialized tutoring, extended or intensive assistance with career decisions or similar needs.
  4. Maintains students' academic files that include a record of the advising activity that takes place during each visit and makes appropriate referrals through Navigate
  5. In collaboration with other members of the Front Line Advising Team, uses data analytics platforms to ensure consistent tracking of and communication with exploratory students.
  6. Serves as a general education liaison for undeclared students who are seeking an evaluation or petition for general education and baccalaureate degree requirements
  7. Assists in comprehensive reviews of student transcripts to identify challenges hindering progress toward graduation
  8. Represents the Navigate Hub for Exploring Students by serving as a liaison to 2-3 colleges to keep informed on curricular and advising changes
  9. Supports Quest classroom visits by leading group Strong Interest Inventory interpretations
  10. Actively participates in one of the following advising focused committees based on interest and fit: Late Withdrawal, Suspension Appeal, Advisor Development, Major Exploration, or Milestone Advising
  11. May plan and participate in professional development related to Major Exploration for campus advising partners
  12. Other duties as assigned which may include advising special populations, class presentations, assessment, professional development activities, internal and external committees

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
  • Two years of direct academic advising experience
  • Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
