Monmouth University is seeking applications for a Safety Officer I in the University Police department.

The Monmouth University Police Department (MUPD) is the primary department charged with creating a safe and secure environment at Monmouth University. MUPD operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The department consists of professional university police, safety officers, dispatchers, staff, and administrators dedicated to providing the best available resources to our community. Safety Officers work in several areas, including the main campus, the Graduate Center at Monmouth Park Corporate Center, and the University Bluffs in Long Branch.



Work Schedule is: Sunday – Thursday from 12:00 am – 8:00 am
This is an in-person, on-campus, non-remote position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • As part of an assigned team, safety officers provide general security, personal safety, and customer services to the University community and specialized protection to preserve and protect university property from theft and vandalism.
  • Report suspicious behavior and unlawful acts to dispatch
  • Safety officers patrol campus, conduct security inspections, open and secure buildings, and may serve as the first point of contact for vehicular traffic coming onto the main campus.
  • Safety officers understand access control systems, fire safety systems, and intrusion alarm systems and are familiar with the locations of emergency exits in the event of an emergency.
  • Safety Officers may staff the University Police Dispatch Control Center and actively monitor security access, CCTV, fire, and intrusion systems.
  • Safety Officers maintain constant standing and active walking patrol to assist University guests with information and assistance.
  • Safety Officers maintain effective working relationships with all campus community members, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors.
  • Safety Officers are aware of and understand all special and general orders about job responsibilities.
  • Safety Officers ensure security and safety and report all deficiencies to their supervisors.
  • Safety Officers are knowledgeable of pedestrian traffic flow, recognize unusual incidents or unwarranted intrusions, and effect prompt and proper requests for assistance when required.
  • Safety Officers communicate for reporting purposes, emergency requests, and regular business.
  • Safety Officers operate departmental vehicles as needed and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Safety Officers are required to engage in various community engagement activities.
  • Safety Officers report to a sergeant or supervisor as appropriate to the assigned location.
  • Must be able to operate a variety of office equipment.

      Minimum Qualifications:
      • High School diploma or equivalent.
      • One (1) year of experience.
      • Ability to work on all shifts (standard work week is 40 hours, regular shifts are 8 hours), during various hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Overtime is mandatory.
      • Physical demands are more than those for sedentary or medium-heavy work; must be able to remain on feet for a minimum of eight hours at a time with breaks. Must be able to defend one's self or others from attack or physical assault.
      • The position requires moderate physical activity. Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, balance, walk, and run or otherwise move objects?
      • Must possess strong critical thinking skills; ability to handle sensitive and challenging situations with professionalism and compassion; ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a diverse team; display sensitivity to the unique role that security plays in a university setting.
      • Effective oral and written communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Firm conflict resolution, negotiation, collaboration, and facilitation skills and experience.
      • Computer and written skills consistent with completing detailed and comprehensive reports on computer-based reporting systems; must have meticulous attention to detail.
      • Must be reliable and able to work independently under established guidelines; must be able to perform duties at night and during inclement weather, including rain, snow, extreme heat, or cold.
      • A valid driver's license in your state of residence and have had no serious violations (Type A) within the past five (5) years and no more than three (3) moving violations (Type B) in the past three (3) years. University Policy found here: Monmouth University Vehicle Use Policy.

      Preferred Qualifications:
      • Associate's degree, two years of college, trade school, or equivalent education; Bachelor's degree highly preferred; Higher Education public safety experience is a plus.
      • The ability to speak a second language is a plus.
      • Experience and commitment to working with and supporting diverse communities.
