Job Summary
The College of Education at Florida Gulf Coast University seeks to hire a collaborative, innovative, service-oriented person to lead the Department Leadership, Counseling and Human Development. Reporting to the Dean of the College, the Department Chair will lead a faculty engaged in multi-faceted and varying instructional programs at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels in child and youth studies, educational leadership and school counseling.

Job Description
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
- Provide vision, leadership, motivation, and supervision to the department and its programs.
- Conduct personnel needs assessments and work with faculty to identify staffing needs, specialties, and expertise to ensure relevant and excellent curricula and instruction.
- Ensure accreditation compliance with all state and federal agencies relevant to each program area within the department.
- Foster a culture of research and scholarship, encouraging faculty to engage in creative, scholarly, and research activities.
- Evaluate and mentor faculty in areas of teaching, research, and service, providing guidance for professional growth. Lead department and unit assessment and accreditation efforts.
- Lead faculty and staff recruitment efforts, conducting searches and ensuring compliance in the hiring process.
- Oversee curriculum development and program enhancement to ensure the department remains at the cutting edge of educational trends and technologies.
- Build and maintain external partnerships with local school districts, professional organizations, and community stakeholders to support program goals and student success.
- Encourage professional development by facilitating opportunities for faculty to attend conferences, workshops, and training programs.
- Oversee student recruitment and retention initiatives, collaborating with faculty to design programs that support student academic success, advising, and mentoring.
- Prepare and submit required internal and external reports, including accreditation documentation, faculty performance evaluations, and departmental reviews.
- Represent the department at college and university-wide committees, contributing to the development of university policies and initiatives.
- Teach assigned courses and adequately perform other duties/responsibilities as articulated on the annual assignment.
- Hold office hours.
- Attend departmental meetings.
- Adopt course materials in a timely manner.
- Adopt the university learning management system.
- Adopt other campus-wide technology platforms as appropriate to other specified job duties.
- Complete mandatory/required training in a timely manner.
- Abide by University Policies and Regulations.
- Participate in the evaluation process in accordance with the CBA and related documents.
- Participate in the assessment process as required by your respective department.
- Timely and professional communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators
- Engage in essential duties with the highest standards of integrity, responsibility, excellence, and within the accepted practices and norms of your respective field/profession.
- Prepare syllabi and instructional materials, develop and deliver lectures, tests, and evaluate students.
- Engages in reflective self-assessment of teaching styles and methods to ensure consistently effective instructional performance.
- Ensure the timely completion and reporting of student learning assessments.
- Continued professional development activity is expected at a level commensurate with rank and the mission of the University.
- Actively participate in community, institutional, and professional service in furtherance of FGCU's mission.
- Attends faculty and college meetings as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor
- Prepare and deliver consistent, interactive lectures that align with curriculum goals.
- Work collaboratively with departmental faculty to ensure curriculum outcomes and accreditation standards are met.
- Advise students and provide individual assistance to students during weekly office hours.
- Perform regular scholarly research and publication.
Additional Job Description
Required Qualifications:
- Earned Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership, School Counseling, Research or closely related field from an accredited institution.
- A record of teaching, scholarly, and service contributions that merits appointment at the rank of Professor in an appropriate academic discipline within the college.
- Experience as a college professor.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as a program coordinator or department chair.
- Documented work as a collaborative leader.
- Experience with curriculum development, accreditation, and program evaluation.
- Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and allocate resources effectively.
Special Instructions to Applicants
Appointment will be made at an out-of-unit faculty rank commensurate with the candidate's experience on a 12-month out-of-unit multi-year appointment basis beginning as early as in Spring 2026.
