Job Description
The Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking applications for a family or adult health advanced practice nurse with a State of Tennessee medical license to provide outpatient primary healthcare in an ambulatory clinic setting for the eligible student population of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus.
The Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is seeking applications for a full-time Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner to perform medical services as a member of a physician-directed health care team specializing in adult primary care. The incumbent will work interdependently, independently, and dependently as a member of a health care team. Duties will be carried out with considerable latitude for independent judgment and action in accordance with established standards and ethics of the medical profession, personal clinical qualifications, and the administrative policies and operational procedures of the Student Health Services.
Responsibilities
- Provision of Medical Services which includes the treatment of specific disease entities, sexual health examinations for all genders, injuries, emotional problems, preventive exams, and performs minor surgical procedures; refer patients to specialists when indicated; and promote preventive healthcare through one-on-one discussions and provision of educational materials. This position maintains adequate, legible and confidential medical records on all patients; performs general health physicals when required or requested; and provides functional supervision of assigned nursing staff
- Other duties such as participation in assigned committees and SHC staff meetings; attends, whenever possible, continuing medical education seminars; periodically acts as a resource person or lecturer for students, faculty, campus, and community organizations; and periodically accepts special assignments to act as a facilitator, liaison and/or chief researcher in the formulation of draft policies, procedures, and recommendations in specific health/medical areas. This position maintains standards as outlined in the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory clinics (AAAHC) of which the Student Health Medical Policies and Procedures are based.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Education: Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program; Licensed registered nurse with an Advance Practice Certification and the designation of having a Certificate of Fitness privileges for prescriptive authority issued by the State of Tennessee.
- Experience: Minimum of two years of clinical primary care experience with an emphasis on adult or family health. Must have a minimum of two years' experience working within an electronic medical record system.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Must possess or can obtain a Controlled Substance Registration Certificate issued by the United States Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Must have basic knowledge of medical coding within the electronic medical record and practice management program.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Ability to speak multiple languages; Extensive knowledge and skill with medical documentation and coding requirements. Knowledge of AAAHC accreditation standards, and previous experience with the electronic health record program called Medicat.

The Student Health Center is a department of the Division of Student Life within the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus. Our mission is to provide primary care in an ambulatory setting to ensure that eligible VOL students maintain healthy medical outcomes to allow them to pursue and meet their educational goals. If a student becomes ill, we want to assess their symptoms and determine how we may assist and return them to health again. Student Health is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Every Wednesday our hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We are a full-service ambulatory clinic which offers medical exams, onsite laboratory testing, radiological services, physical therapy, immunizations, psychiatric care, and pharmacy services.
