Job Summary

This is position is responsible for the daily management, and limited administrative work in planning, assigning, and supervisory oversight of a major division of the police department. Work involves the responsibility for planning, assigning, managing and supervising daily activities of police officers, dispatchers, and campus safety officers. This includes assigning tasks, analyzing and evaluating officer's reports, and participating in officer training programs. Work includes the responsibility for making decisions regarding actions to be taken and exercising independent judgment in the application of laws and ordinances. Supervision is exercised through subordinate supervisors over all employees of the assigned operation. Work is performed independently within established laws, policies, and regulations and is reviewed through conferences and reports.

This position is considered administrative in nature and the typical work is sedentary with office hours of 8 to 5 with an hour of lunch, Monday through Friday. However, the Captain may be called on for protection of life and property and enforcing the laws of the state of Georgia. As such the Captain should be prepared to assist or support the patrol functions of the agency at a moment's notice.

Responsibilities

Significant Duties & Responsibilities include: Plans, assigns, supervises, manages, and participates in the programs and activities of the patrol/uniformed division (20%).; Plans, assigns, supervises, manages, and participates in the programs and activities of the Communications and Non-sworn Security divisions (20%).; Develops staffing plans; studies crime and other reports to determine trends and makes recommendations for changes in organization and operating procedures to obtain the most effective results (10%).; Prepares or directs the preparation and maintenance of necessary records and reports (10%).; Reviews and approves daily reports generated by the patrol division (15%).; Acts as Hiring Manager for vacant positions within each division (10%).; Performs related work as required (5%).

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications include: A Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field or at least 10 years of law enforcement experience with 5 or more years in a supervisory capacity and 5 or more years of experience in a college or university setting.; Must be eligible for the Georgia Peace Officer Basic Law Enforcement Certification by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, or be able to attain this certification within one year of employment as Defined by O.C.G.A. 35-8-8.; Must have a valid driver's license.; Must be in good physical health, possess 20/20 vision or vision correctable to 20/20, ability to hear and speak clearly, walk, run, jump and lift 50 pounds. Ability to use a firearm safely and accurately is crucial. A professional appearance of applicant is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications include: Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council certified instructor.; Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council supervision certificate.; Specialized training related to management or leadership such as Command College or Georgia Peace Officer Management Certification.

Proposed Salary

The proposed annualized salary for this position is $70,000 and includes full benefits.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities include: Thorough knowledge of modern police methods, practices, and techniques.; Thorough knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and university regulations.; Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices of police administration.; Considerable knowledge of the functions and objectives of other state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies.; Ability to analyze complex police problems.; Ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of subordinates and to advise, instruct, and train personnel.; Ability to write and speak effectively.; Ability to exercise command under the most difficult of conditions, based upon recognition by subordinates of the technical competence, character, and emotional suitability of the superior.; Ability to deal with the public firmly and courteously under stress conditions and to establish effective working relationships with the public, news media, and others contacted in the course of work.; Skill in the use and care of firearms and firm administration of firearms safety policies.; Skill in first aid training.

Conditions of Employment
