The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania seeks a strategic, collaborative, and globally minded leader to serve as Senior Director of Major Gifts. Reporting to the Senior Executive Director of Development, the Senior Director will lead Wharton's integrated major gifts program, encompassing both domestic and international markets. This role presents a unique opportunity to guide a high-performing team and advance a comprehensive philanthropic vision that aligns with Wharton's global strategy.
The Senior Director will be responsible for developing and executing a robust major gifts strategy, managing a dynamic team of frontline fundraisers and staff, and personally engaging a portfolio of highly rated prospects capable of making leadership commitments. The Senior Director will partner closely with the Dean, Vice Dean, faculty leadership, and colleagues across the School and University to elevate philanthropic engagement and deliver sustained, mission-critical support.
In addition, this individual will serve as the School's liaison to Penn's Office of Gift Planning and lead stewardship efforts for planned giving through Whartons Hattersley Society.
Job Description
Job Responsibilities
* The Senior Director of Major Gifts will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight across Wharton's integrated domestic and international major gifts program. This individual will oversee a team of frontline major gift officers, regional directors, and support staff, guiding their professional development and performance while fostering a high-achieving culture built on collaboration, accountability, and shared success.
* In close coordination with the Dean, Chief Advancement Officer, Senior Executive Director of Principal Gifts and Boards, and other stakeholders, the Senior Director will ensure fundraising activities are tightly aligned with Wharton's overarching strategic goals. They will serve as a key liaison to Penn's central Office of Gift Planning and will lead the stewardship of Wharton's Hattersley Society, which honors alumni and friends who have included the School in their estate plans.
* The Senior Director will maintain a personal portfolio of approximately 50 major and principal gift prospects, with an emphasis on cultivating relationships with individuals capable of making commitments of $250,000 and above. This work requires the ability to develop nuanced, culturally informed engagement strategies that reflect regional philanthropic norms, tax considerations, and donor motivations. Collaboration with Wharton faculty, alumni relations, research centers, and Executive Education will be essential to maximize engagement opportunities and enhance the donor experience.
* In addition to frontline fundraising, the Senior Director will be charged with developing a cost-effective, scalable framework for global outreach and long-term donor engagement. Working closely with communications and marketing colleagues, they will shape region-specific messaging and fundraising materials that resonate across a global alumni base. The Senior Director will also contribute meaningfully to the development of long-range strategic plans and lead the implementation of new initiatives to expand philanthropic support for Wharton's mission.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor of Science and 7 to 10 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Experience managing complex issues and problem-solving
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Supervisory experience and/or experience in managing department budgets preferred
- Demonstrated ability to set priorities and work efficiently in a highly pressured environment.
- Must have keen interpersonal and organizational skills and excellent judgment. At all times,
- Must exhibit a high degree of diplomacy, tact, and a strong sense of discretion.
- Excellent organizational skills as well as the ability to relate to all levels of personnel required.
- Must be able to react to time-sensitive matters as well as manage complex, longer-term initiatives
- Experience in both nonprofit/higher education and corporate contexts strongly preferred.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, and in alignment with salary ranges based on external market data for the job's level.
