Job Description
The Academic Advisor will provide quality academic advisement to an assigned caseload of no more than 220 first-year college students; educate students on degree requirements, policies and procedures, campus resources, and how to use advising tools and technology; counsel students experiencing academic obstacles; maintain accurate records; and assist with new student orientation. Additionally, the Academic Advisor will maintain relationships with assigned academic departments and perform other duties as assigned.



Responsibilities
  • Assess individual student needs to provide quality academic advisement in a one-on-one setting to assigned student caseload of first-year students during the academic year and at new student orientations by: aiding students in establishing realistic and attainable academic goals; helping students navigate higher education and prepare for their second year in college; developing academic plans that support students' academic, professional, and personal goals; educating students about degree requirements, university policies and procedures, how to access resources, and how to use advising-related tools and technology; counseling students with identifying and overcoming academic obstacles through thoughtful educational planning; and making appropriate referrals to campus services and resources that promote academic success and campus engagement


  • Communicate effectively with students, their families, and campus stakeholders, which includes maintaining accurate student records, creating and updating accurate degree plans for caseload, entering effective appointment notes, and developing and maintaining a strong communication line with academic departments and various student support divisions, and regularly participating in UTC's Advisors' Council


  • Preregister incoming first-year students, present information sessions, and assist students with advising and registering for classes at new student orientation


  • Cover designated office walk-in hours and respond to departmental email


The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Attentiveness to detail and strong organization skills
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and faculty of all backgrounds and experience levels
  • Ability to prioritize multiple requests and handle them in an efficient and timely manner
  • Ability to thoroughly understand and abide by federal and university guidelines regarding student confidentiality requirements

Anticipated Salary $43,500


Qualifications
Minimum: Requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant field and two years of relevant experience in a secondary or higher education setting working with the academic needs of high school seniors, prospective college students, or college students; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred: A master's degree; experience with Banner and EAB Navigate; and a work background in a higher-education institution, providing one-on-one advising-related services to first-year college students is preferred.
