About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

Assist with maintaining the University's fleet maintenance program which includes vehicles, carts, heavy equipment and other motorized equipment. Responsible for ensuring safe operation of all vehicles and equipment; completing routine and non-routine repairs in a timely manner; implement programs/schedules for maintenance to maximize the efficient use of fleet & University resources; monitors inventory and usage;

Work is performed at a professional level in the field of automotive, diesel and small equipment repairs and preventive maintenance.

The job of the Fleet Technician is done for the purpose/s of determining needed repairs and/or replacements on SMU owned vehicles; ensuring the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition; and providing written documentation of repairs and preventative maintenance to meet SMU University, city, state and federal requirements.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for the maintenance and repair of all vehicles and equipment. Checks all repair work performed including physical inspections and road tests before vehicle is returned to service. Ensure that vehicles are kept clean and washed after repair is completed
  • Perform a preventative maintenance program to assure cost effective maintenance and a scheduled maintenance program to provide maintenance by manufacturers specifications. Keeps maintenance and repair records for fleet.

  • Maintains a complete inventory system through recording of all expenditures of each vehicle, maintenance equipment, repair parts, supplies, etc. Structural maintenance and troubleshooting of IWMS/CMMS computer system.

  • Monitors usage of fleet for reporting, compliance, industry recalls, and for future forecasting. Works within budget to support fleet and fleet maintenance. Researches and makes recommendations on future fleet and equipment purchases. Purchase repair parts and supplies. Negotiates on behalf of University with contractors and mechanics for cost of repairs performed elsewhere.

  • Ensures all fleet comply with state and local regulations including purchasing license registration and archiving titles. Responsible for inspections of oil related containment areas.

  • Emergency generator record keeping, preventive maintenance, schedule for services and storage.

  • Ability to work with others; take vehicles out of service for work to be performed, May need to assign alternative vehicle when taking vehicles out of service for repairs or PMs. Utilize a wide variety of types of job-related equipment. Must have ability to problem solving based on organizational objectives.

  • Have the ability to perform job under some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions i.e. inclement weather.

  • Ability to support team for Events i.e. Football, Graduations, or Etc.
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of work experience is required, preferably in related field/trade OR completion of a vocational/trade program in automotive mechanics or related field and (2) year experience as a mechanic.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication is a must. Candidate must have the ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair equipment with accuracy and speed. Knowledge of methods, techniques, and procedures involved in maintenance repairs and replacement. Considerable knowledge of safety practices and techniques in mechanics. Considerable knowledge of diesel and gas engine mechanics and parts and supplies is required. Candidate with knowledge of IWMS/CMMS (computerized maintenance management software) and/or electronic diagnostic equipment is preferred.

Candidate must posses TX driver's license and clear MVR. Candidate with ASE Automotive Technician certifications is preferred. Basic knowledge of MS Word and Excel is preferred.

Shift flex is required for evenings and weekends. Schedules may be adjusted to accommodate coverage for 1st & 2nd shifts during weekdays and/or weekends for temporary or permanent shift changes. Required to respond to emergency calls. Considered essential personal
