Job Summary:
The Kostas Research Institute (Kostas) is the applied research arm of Northeastern University, primarily focused on DoD-related S&T R&D. Kostas is headquartered on the Northeastern University Innovation Campus at Burlington, MA (ICBM), and also maintains sites in Arlington VA, and Brunswick ME. Affiliated with Kostas is the independent 501(c) 3 KRI at Northeastern University, LLC (KRI), a wholly owned special-purpose subsidiary of the University.
KRI is a vital component of the University as it executes its mission to discover and translate new knowledge for the benefit of society and educate people for a lifetime of fulfillment. The organization is looking to grow its top-line revenue rapidly, to and beyond an annual level of $500 million, winning and executing S&T R&D programs for US government mission-driven agencies, other allied governments, and corporate customers, and transitioning the outputs of these programs for the benefit of the nation and its allies, and commercial success. To ensure efficient and successful execution of Contract Research and Development (CRAD) programs, KRI is seeking an executive who will have the role of Director of the Program Management (DPM).
The DPM is responsible for overall program management and is accountable for execution, customer satisfaction, and financial performance through the day-to-day supervision of the Program Management Team. The role will facilitate the successful interface between customers and the internal organization for the planning, processing, and implementation of CRAD programs. The DPM will implement PM best practices and will ensure that PM staff are properly trained and resourced.
The DPM is an executive leadership role within the organization with responsibilities that include: forming and maintaining strong relationships with customers, sponsors, and partners; help in identifying funding opportunities and supporting the development of competitive proposals and ensuring that the program budget and schedule are competitive yet realistic; ensuring that funded programs are exceptionally executed; identifying opportunities for follow-on funding to existing programs; and recruiting, mentoring, and managing PM staff and support personnel.
The successful candidate for DPM will work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams across the KRI consortium, consisting of academic, industry, and government partners to support the development of technical solutions and prototypes with a focus on application to real-world problems and requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 10+ years program management experience in DoD CRAD program execution
- Experience leading program management teams
- BA or BS required
- Strong understanding of DoD organizations and funding
- Strong understanding of technical program management in a fast-paced setting
- Required: willingness and ability to obtain a DoD security clearance. Preferred: Active DoD secret clearance or above, ability to obtain Special Access clearance
- Strong working knowledge of industry regulations and standards
- Strong management skills with an impeccable ethical approach to work and leadership
- Demonstrated results in creating a diverse and inclusive work environment
- Ability to travel domestically & internationally as needed
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and establish a continuous improvement approach to the Program Management Office (90%)
- Successfully recruit, mentor, lead, and manage PM staff (10%)

Expected Hiring Range:
$154,810.00 - $224,473.75
With the pay range(s) shown above, the starting salary will depend on several factors, which may include your education, experience, location, knowledge and expertise, and skills as well as a pay comparison to similarly-situated employees already in the role.
