Under the direction of the Food Service Manager, oversee and participate in the day-to-day operations of a campus coffee shop.

This position is assigned to the Visalia Campus, Full-Time 12-month position.

Monday - Friday, 7:45 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.

Initial placement is at $47,798.00

Job Duties

Job duties of the Coffee Shop Lead include:

  • Overseesday-to-daycoffeeshopoperations,ensuringefficientworkflow,and maintaining high standards of food preparation and service.
  • Ensuresthatallfooditemsarepreparedandpresentedaccordingtoestablishedrecipes, quality standards, and food safety regulations.
  • Ensures compliance with health and safety regulations. This may include wearing appropriate personal protective equipment(PPE), and practicing safe food handling techniques.
  • Coordinatesstudentworkersandworkstudystudents,toincludeassigningtasks,and providing guidance and training when needed.
  • Collaborateswithmanager,culinaryinstructors,orotherstakeholderstoplanmenus and develop new recipes that meet the nutritional and dietary needs of the college community.
  • Collaborates with other departments, such as event planning or catering, to meet the culinaryneedsofthecollege.Thismayinvolvecoordinatingspecialevents,catering orders, or collaborating with student organizations.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders supplies and ingredients as needed and maintains records.Ensuresproperstorageandrotationofperishableitemstominimizewaste.
  • Assists in regular inventory of supplies.
  • Interactswithstudents,faculty,andothermembersofthecollegecommunity, addressing inquiries, concerns, and feedback.
  • Preparesandpresentsavarietyofspecialtycoffeeandespresso-baseddrinks,teas, blended drinks, and seasonal beverages according to standardized recipes.
  • Cleansandmaintainsespressomachineandotherassignedequipmentaccordingto established health and sanitation standards; reports needed equipment repairs to supervisor.
  • Prepares foods for special events and catered functions as directed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge andabilitieslistedaboveincludingtwoyears'experienceininstitutionalfoodservicepreferablyin a coffee shop or cafe setting that included hands-on experience preparing espresso drinks, brewed coffee, teas, and light food items.

Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:

  • Culinary techniques, food preparation, and kitchen operations.
  • Food safety regulations, including HACCP guidelines.
  • Nutritionanddietaryrequirements,particularlyastheyrelatetoadiversecollege campus.
  • Menu planning, recipe development, and portion control.
  • Inventory management, including ordering, stock rotation, and cost control.
  • Budgeting and financial principles as they apply to kitchen operations.
  • Currenttrendsandbestpracticesintheculinaryandcoffeeindustry,including sustainability and local sourcing.
  • Espresso and coffee equipment and its proper use
  • Customerserviceprinciplesandtheabilitytoprovideapositivediningexperience for diverse populations.
Ability to:
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills, with the ability to effectively coordinate and motivate a coffee shop team.
  • Exhibitexcellentorganizationalandtimemanagementskillstoensuresmooth coffee shop operations and meet deadlines.
  • Havestrongattentiontodetailandcommitmenttomaintaininghigh-quality standards in food preparation, presentation, and service.
  • Utilizestrongproblem-solvinganddecision-makingabilitiestoaddressissuesthat may arise in a fast-paced coffee shop environment.
  • Establisheffectivecommunicationskillstocollaboratewithkitchenstaff,culinary instructors, college administrators, and other stakeholders.
  • Work well under pressure and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Adapt to changing needs and priorities in a community college setting.

  • Demonstratestronginterpersonalskillsandtheabilitytointeractpositivelywith students, faculty, and other members of the college campus.
  • Adaptacontinuouslearningmindsettostayupdatedonindustrytrends,culinary techniques, and relevant regulations.

Environment
  • Exposure to heat, noise, and odors associated with food preparation and cooking.
  • Constant interruptions.

Physical Abilities Ability to:
  • operate standard espresso equipment.
  • hear and speak to communicate with students/employees/public.

  • stand for extended periods of time.
  • reach in all directions and bend at the waist.
  • lift moderately heavy objects.
Hazards
  • Working around and with equipment having moving parts and sharp blades.
  • Extreme heat from espresso equipment and brewed coffee.
