Summary


Maintains general health of laboratory animals and their environment. Performs light maintenance work around the facility. Monitors facility security.

Essential Functions


  • Researches and performs animal care, including maintenance of healthy micro and macro environments. Cleans cages and housing rooms. Handles and disposes of potentially biohazardous materials. Provides enrichment material for research animals. Uses power scrubber, power washer and chemicals to sanitize rooms. Measures environment quality of facility.
  • Evaluates general health of animals. Calculates dosages and administers drugs to animals. Assists in survival surgeries and performs non-survival surgeries. Performs post approval monitoring of research protocols.
  • Maintains facility security using biometric and mechanical security systems to protect research data, research animals and researchers. Maintains identification records of both research animals and researchers.
  • Maintains facilities and equipment. Paints and repairs facilities and equipment. Performs light plumbing and electrical work. Builds and repairs animal housing.


Minimum Qualifications

The following Education is required:
  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Ability to carry out verbal and/or written instructions

  • Ability to interact effectively with students, faculty and/or staff or the public and represent BGSU appropriately
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills
  • Ability to access and maintain document imaging systems, including scanning and filing documents
  • Ability to operate computers and peripheral equipment such as printers
  • Knowledge of basic science and scientific methods
  • Ability to operate and use manual and power custodial equipment
  • Ability to operate hand and/or power tools appropriate to the trade
  • Ability to operate hand and/or power grounds keeping equipment
  • Understanding of laboratory animal handling techniques and principles
