OPS Retention and Transition Programs Assistant

Job Summary
The OPS Retention and Transition Programs Assistant plays a critical, supporting role in the design, development, and implementation of FGCU's Retention and Transition programs. This position supports key programmatic elements of new student orientation, the university's summer bridge program, and family engagement initiatives, while also supporting additional retention and transition focused efforts. The Assistant collaborates with the Retention & Transition programs staff, along with campus and community partners, to create engaging experiences that foster academic readiness, student success, and strong connection between students and the university.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities
  • Serves in a supporting role to the Retention & Transition Programs staff in the design, development, and implementation of comprehensive programs within the Retention and Transition programs portfolio.
  • Performs clerical tasks that support the successful implementation of Retention and Transition programs.
  • Supports the success of the operational goals and strategic plan of all Retention and Transition programs.
  • Provides elevated customer service to resolve problems and issues within Retention and Transition Programs.
  • Collaborates and works closely with campus and community partners, including faculty, staff, and student leaders, to align retention and transition efforts.
  • Contributes to initiatives that promote persistence, academic achievement, and student success such as Weeks of Welcome, Eagle EXPO, and Say Yes to the Nest.
  • Collaborates with students and OPS staff assisting with the implementation of retention and transition programs.
  • Assists with the recruitment, selection, and training of student and OPS staff.
  • Assists with the development of the training curriculum and oversight of the student leader training program.
  • Stays current on trends in higher education, retention, and transition programs; may participate in professional organizations, conferences, and workshops.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends in support of key programs.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn student information systems such as Banner.
  • Knowledge of involvement theories and how they pertain to student success and persistence.
  • Knowledge of FERPA Regulations for handling student records.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively in a team environment.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, apply, and explain policies and procedures.
  • Excellent organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work independently to complete assignments.
  • Ability to utilize data and information to make decisions and projections.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build strategic relations with colleagues, coworkers, constituents, and volunteers.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with staff, faculty, students, and the community in a service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations when numerous and competing demands are involved.
  • Ability to present to large groups.
  • Ability to develop and deliver training presentations and programs.
  • Ability to assess program needs and conceptualize new programs.
  • Ability to operate personal computers with proficiency and learn new applications and systems.
