DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM SUMMARY
TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded grant program designed to support participants who are low-income, first-generation and/or individuals with disabilities. The goal of TRIO SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rate of participants, facilitate transition to a career or post-baccalaureate programs of study, and empower participants in their academic, personal and professional growth. Services provided by the program include: academic and study skill development; academic, financial, and personal counseling; assistance in securing financial aid; assistance in securing admission and financial aid for graduate/ professional programs; information about career options; individualized success plan; computer, print, and academic resource access; participation in enrichment activities; mentoring; and climate supportive of the success of low-income students, first-generation and/or students with documented disabilities.

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the TRIO SSS Programs Project Director and Senior Director of Early Outreach and Support Programs, the SSS Retention Advisor performs professional student services work in the areas of assessing, advising, and retaining project participants, including 1:1 advising, developing academic plans and educational/professional pathways, and developing and implementing academic/enrichment workshops and events. The Advisor analyzes student data, supports evaluation, and suggests coordinated retention efforts.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform comprehensive professional advising, utilizing an asset-based approach, with the goal of retaining and graduating low-income, first generation students and students with disabilities.
  • Assist participants in planning and implementing long-range academic goals and educational plans; applying for and navigating financial aid; and understanding college policies and procedures.
  • Case-manage and monitor student academic progress; collaborate with other support services in retention of students, including academic probation and at-risk students.
  • Provide advising and guidance to students concerning current and future employment/career trends and professional pathways.
  • Assist in developing and facilitating SSS student activities, including orientations, Summer Academy, enrichment activities, academic/professional development workshops, and graduate school visits.
  • Assist in outreach, recruitment and admission of eligible students to the SSS Program.
  • Assist in hiring, training, and supervising student staff (peer mentors).
  • Support program recordkeeping, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with individuals and groups of varying ages and backgrounds.
  • Completion of FERPA Data Security training in order to handle appropriate sensitive student information in a confidential manner, where judgement and discretion are essential. Ensure confidentiality of program records and other sensitive information.

OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Work closely with other support teams on campus (e.g. SSS STEM-HS, EOP, Academic Advising, Financial Aid, etc.) to identify eligible students and support student retention and success initiatives.
  • Promote and maintain an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service.
  • Represent the SSS program at university functions and appropriate meetings.
  • Make program decisions in the absence of the SSS/SSS STEM-HS Project Director.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices and strategies to improve access and retention for first generation, low-income students and students with disabilities. Demonstrated knowledge, commitment, and ability to work with students from SSS-eligible backgrounds. Strong advisory and leadership skills that demonstrate sensitivity toward students' backgrounds.
  • Working knowledge of basic principles of educational counseling and individual/group behavior. Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning students' academic pathways, implementing program services and improvements. Ability to gather and analyze data and records to enhance services for students. Ability to reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations for the program, university and students.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire working knowledge of the objectives of TRIO SSS, the Early Outreach and Support Programs department, and its relationship to the campus. Ability to interpret and apply federal regulations and program rules provided through the grant proposal. Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and university policies and regulations pertaining to academic achievement.
  • Ability to participate and contribute in group meetings, conferences, and interviews. Excellent writing and oral communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff, student organizations, and other private and public agencies. Ability to work effectively and interdependently in a diverse university environment. Knowledge of and understanding of Title V, E.O. 595, 665, 405, and CSUMB Admissions and Financial Aid policies.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university AND two years of experience in areas related to college-level advising, retention, and/or student services for low-income, first generation students and students with disabilities. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Advanced degree may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence.
  • A master's degree in a related field (e.g. counseling, college student personnel, higher education, human development, etc.). Experience working with diverse populations and in an academic setting preferred. Experience leading success workshops/events for students.

The hourly hiring range for this position is $24.50 - $27. Classification: Grade 4, Staff. This is a non-exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
