Job Description Summary

This is a recruitment for a short-term/temporary position.

The Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) provides information and supportive services to Cuesta College students with verified disabilities to help them participate fully and benefit as equitably from the college experience. An Academic Accommodation Plan (AAP) is developed for each student which links students goals, curriculum program, and academic accommodations to meet their specific educational limitation.

Essential Functions & Qualifications


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Ability to hear spoken English and use ASL, Signed English to effectively generate language;
  • Working knowledge of the process of interpretation to convey accurately the register, tone intent and content of the consumer's message;
  • Ability to interpret and transliterate between both ASL, spoken English and sign systems at a speed required by the assignment, which may involve a variety of settings such as a classroom, conference and/or one-on-one meetings;
  • Working knowledge of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) code of professional conduct;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf and hard-of-Hearing Culture.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required qualifications for Level I - V Interpreter
  • Level I - Passed Cuesta College Interpreter Evaluation at Communication Facilitator level, plus 150 hours of college level or equivalent experience.
  • Level II - Completion of Level I requirements OR completion of Interpreter Training Program AND/OR an AA degree program in interpretation AND/OR ASL; code of ethics class or workshop plus 300 hours of community college lecture or equivalent experience.
  • Level III - Completion of Interpreter Training Program and /or an AA degree in interpretation and /or ASL; plus 800 hours of community college or equivalent experience OR possession of a NAD Level 3 certification and /or Baccalaureate degree plus 800 hours of community college or equivalent experience.
  • Level IV - Certificate of Interpretation OR Certificate of Transliteration from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf AND/OR NAD Certification Level 4 plus 1200 hours of paid interpreting experience AND/OR 5 years working as an educational interpreter.
  • Level V - Certificate of Interpretation And Certificate of Transliteration (or Comprehensive Skills Certificate) from RID AND/OR NAD Certification Level 5 plus 1200 of paid interpreting experience AND/OR 20 years working as an educational interpreter.


Also Required:
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
