Sr Lab Technician, Mass Spectrometry Facility

Sr Lab Technician, Mass Spectrometry Facility
About the Opportunity
SUMMARY
The Sr Lab Technician of the shared Research Mass Spectrometry Facility within the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology will be responsible for operating a key research facility for Northeastern University and its partners. Specifically, the Sr Lab Technician will be charged with operating and maintaining chromatography and mass spectrometry equipment, performing sample preparation, conducting data analysis, partnering with researchers on method development and evaluation, and training students and others on the use of the Facility and its equipment. This person will work closely with Associate Director of the Facility and will periodically interact with Faculty Director of the Facility.
The Sr Lab Technician will also lead other administrative duties related to operating the laboratory efficiently. This will include overseeing a shared consumables budget and associated ordering, setting up service contracts for equipment, ensuring all equipment is properly maintained, and working as a liaison to college and university space and safety staff.
Services provided on a regular basis by the Facility include protein identification, quantitative proteomics, quantitative metabolomics, targeted small-molecule quantification, and protein characterization (intact mass analysis). The position requires interaction with many researchers, strong communication and organizational skills, and the ability to train users and manage multiple projects at once.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Equipment Operation, Maintenance, and Training - The Sr Lab Technician of the Facility will be responsible for operating the Facility equipment and preparing samples. Additionally, the Sr Lab Technician will be engaged in troubleshooting, maintaining, and operating liquid chromatographs, mass spectrometers, and other associated equipment used in the analysis of biological and chemical samples, including biological fluids, tissues, cells, and bacteria. This person will also be responsible for training students and prospective users who will operate mass spectrometers frequently.
Method Development and Researcher Support - The Sr Lab Technician will assist the Associate Director in developing new methods, particularly in single-cell proteomics and small molecule quantification, and will contribute to equipment and training proposals.
Laboratory Management of Space, Health, and Safety Matters - The Sr Lab Technician will work with the Associate Director of the Facility and the College Safety Officer to maintain a safe working environment and to address identified laboratory safety and facilities issues immediately.
Supply Management and Equipment Service Oversight - The Sr Lab Technician will help manage a consumables budget, monitoring spending and initiating purchases on behalf of the laboratory. The Sr Lab Technician will also assist in managing instrument service contracts.

Experience with protein sample preparation, small molecule extraction, and data processing (using open source software, such as MaxQuant, Perseus, and Skyline) is also required. The preferred candidate has a solid understanding of proteomics, metabolomics, protein chemistry, and protein characterization methods. Experience with protein identification and characterization of post-translational modifications, including in-depth knowledge of Orbitraps, triple quadrupole, and TimsTOF instrument operation and maintenance, data interpretation, and background literature is preferred. Interest or expertise in single-cell and limited sample proteomics is highly desirable. Knowledge of R or Python coding would be desirable but not necessary.
