The Research Safety division of the Environmental Health & Safety is responsible for laboratory safety programs at Boston University and Boston Medical Center. The Research Safety division develops, maintains, and implement safety programs, policies, and procedures in accordance with federal, state and local laws, standards, and other applicable regulations and best practices. The program assists the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Laboratory Safety Committee, and the Institutional Animal Use and Care Committee by providing reports, serving as technical subject matter experts, and assisting with the development of policies, procedures, and guidance documents. This position works closely with the their assigned schools and departments to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. The research safety specialists also perform the following: laboratory design consultations; review and design of safe research experiments; implementation of safety policies and procedures; comprehensive laboratory verification inspections; review of activities involving the use of hazardous materials including but not limited to infectious biological substances, recombinant DNA, hazardous chemicals, toxic gases, controlled substances; emergency action plans; health & safety training; provide guidance and training on transport and shipping of biological materials and chemicals; review use of hazardous materials in research and experimental animal procedures; and coordinate visits and inspections by outside regulatory agencies.

Required Skills

Minimum 3 years of related experience, Degree (BA, BS, or MS) in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Life Science, or Health & Safety. Certification designation in a health and safety or related discipline preferred (Certified Safety Professional, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Certified Environmental Manager, Certified Industrial Hygienist, etc). Proficient with computer related office programs including Microsoft Office, Familiarity with the laboratory environment, handling of chemicals and hazardous gasses, use of standard lab equipment, safe handling and proper disposal of hazardous materials. Ability to respond to emergencies on campus during off hours, including weekends and holidays as part of the on-call emergency response team. Must have or obtain the 24 or 40-hour OSHA hazardous waste operations and emergency response training. Must be able to work independently and in a team environment, good verbal and written communication skills, able to work with different organizations within the academic community as well as outside regulatory agencies. This position requires completion of a pre-placement physical questionnaire, on-site physical, medical surveillance, CORI background check.
