The mission of the Augusta University Police Department is to promote a safe atmosphere in which the university's teaching, discovery, clinical care and service mission can be successful. This is accomplished through traditional and progressive law enforcement practices and strong community partnership.
Job Summary
The Police Sergeant assigned to the Dignitary Protection Unit provides leadership, direction, and operational oversight for sworn personnel responsible for safeguarding elected officials, visiting dignitaries, and other designated protectees. Ensures that all protection operations are executed with professionalism, discretion, and adherence to established law enforcement standards, while maintaining strong coordination with local, state, federal, and international security partners.
Secondarily, performs the duties of the department's Police Intelligence Analyst and provides critical research, analysis, and intelligence support to law enforcement operations. This role is responsible for collecting, evaluating, and interpreting data from multiple sources to identify patterns, trends, and actionable intelligence that inform crime prevention, investigations, and operational decision-making.
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
- Develop, implement, and oversee protection plans for dignitaries, high-profile visitors, and special events. Conduct site assessments, threat analysis, and advance planning to mitigate risks. Direct security details during motorcades, public appearances, and official functions. Manage staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation for unit operations.
- Collect, process, and analyze crime data, intelligence reports, and opensource information. Identify crime trends, emerging threats, and potential risks to public safety. Develop and disseminate intelligence products, briefings, and reports to support investigations, tactical operations, and strategic planning.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in sensitive situations. Prepare reports, after-action reviews, and documentation related to security operations. Enforce departmental policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate assigned officers within the Dignitary Protection Unit. Provide training and guidance in protective tactics, emergency response, and dignitary security protocols.
- Collaborate with investigators, patrol officers, command staff, and partner agencies to share intelligence and enhance situational awareness.
- Maintain intelligence databases and ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and departmental standards for information handling. Support dignitary protection, special events, and critical incident planning with timely intelligence assessments. Monitor and analyze organized crime, gang activity, narcotics trafficking, terrorism, and other public safety concerns.

Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
High School Diploma or GED from a recognized State or Federal accredited organization
Must be 21, must possess moral and ethical character and must be a POST certified Police Officer with two years experience as a Police Officer.
A valid driver's license is required.

Prior experience in law enforcement, intelligence analysis, or a related field preferred.
Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills.
Prior experience in protective services, tactical operations, or executive security preferred.
Strong leadership, decision-making, and communication skills.
Ability to remain composed and decisive under pressure.
Completion of relevant dignitary protection or advanced security training desirable.

Ability to maintain confidentiality, to keep complex records, and the ability to perform well under stress in a calm, efficient manner
Excellent in interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of criminal justice systems, investigative procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local laws
Knowledge of needed tools and techniques appropriate to identify, analyze, and solve technical problems
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases

Shift: Days/M-F
Pay Band: 11
Salary: Minimum $27.21/hour - $30.41/hour
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.

Conditions of Employment

7. Any relevant information in the National Law Enforcement Accountability Database
8. Voice stress analyzer (CVSA) examination
9. Medical examination, drug screen, and psychological examination
10. Determination of employment eligibility, including U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
11. Successfully complete POST certification requirements for a sworn police officer in the State of Georgia
12. Perform Mandatory reporting and response duties as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) pursuant to the Clery Act.
Credit Check
This position will require the acquisition of a P-Card and/or handle cash, credit or other sensitive information and will require a satisfactory Consumer Credit check as a condition of employment.
Driver's License Statement
The Human Resources Division will request a driver's history report for the identified top candidate(s) for this position. We will initiate this through our Background Check Vendor; this report will come from the Department of Motor Vehicles. The selected candidate must have a valid driver's license.
