Environmental Technician I

Job Summary

Environmental Technicians
Provide services to campus partners related to management and disposal of unwanted hazardous materials. Ensure university is adhering to relevant regulations, policies and procedures and is in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to disposal of regulated waste generated by university operations. Typically requires high school/trade school education, associate degree, certification, or professional training. Perform routine tasks as directed and under close supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Collect, transport, and process hazardous and potentially hazardous chemical, biological, radiological materials.
  • Operate and maintain vehicles and equipment (carts, hand trucks, pallet jacks, fume hoods, etc) according to standard protocols.
  • Maintain and update regulated waste cradle-to-grave database management system and ensures appropriate documentation for on Campus items.
  • Maintains the Regulated Waste Management Facility and supporting equipment as directed.
  • Use necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) based on potential chemical or biological exposure.
  • Assist with mitigation of emergencies and spills involving chemical, radiological, and biological materials.



May also be required to:
  • Coordinate and assist researchers and staff with lab moves and lab clean-outs.
  • Consolidate or bulk compatible waste materials into drums.
  • Assists in laboratory inspections to ensure compliance with appropriate regulatory and University of Utah policy and procedures.
  • Inform researchers of proper waste labeling and storage.
  • Coordinate with waste transporters and vendors supplying equipment and/or materials.
  • Develop and maintain databases for the regulated waste program. Analyzes information to identify areas for quality improvement.




Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Environmental Technician, I: Requires little to no related experience.
