Position Description
Performs specialized work in conducting original research. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project. May supervise research and student assistants.
This appointment is an active, hands-on position involving the care and management of floral material from the Archaeological Collections of the Anthropology Division and the Lubbock Lake Landmark. The Collections Research Aide is expected to be knowledgeable in collections management, the ethics, legal issues, and best practices in governing anthropological collections, and understand the importance of provenience and provenance. The Collections Research Aide reports to the Lubbock Lake Landmark Associate Collections Manager.

The major focus of this position is the installation of floral remains in the collection, including any problem solving required to facilitate this process.

About the Department and/or College
The Museum of Texas Tech University invites applications for the full-time position of Collections Research Aide for the Anthropology Division and Lubbock Lake Landmark. The Anthropology Division has a 4.3 million collection while overall the Museum has a 9 million+ diverse collection in the arts, humanities, and natural sciences within a facility of over 250,000 square feet. The Museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, with active collecting, exhibition, and education programs. The Landmark is a satellite heritage facility of the Museum and located ~2.5miles north of the main Museum complex.


Major/Essential Functions
Primary Duties
  • Resolve issues pertaining to past identification loans of seed and charcoal for tree identification samples, including data issues, mismatches, and lack of identification updates in the Division's catalog databases.
  • Complete all cataloging and data entry related to seed and charcoal for tree identification samples, including, but not limited to, those from the Yellowhouse system and Post region.
  • Repackage and relabel seed and charcoal for tree identification samples as required.
  • Barcode all seed and charcoal for tree identification samples in the collection and ensure barcode functionality.
  • Install seed and charcoal for tree identification samples into the Division's permanent storage.
  • Assist Division and Landmark staff with new seed and charcoal identification loans.
  • Organize, catalog, data enter and appropriately house the seed comparative collection.
Secondary Duties
  • Cataloging and data entry related to radiocarbon samples.
  • Assist Division and Landmark staff with new radiocarbon loans.
  • Assisting with organizing obsidian identification loans.
  • Cataloging and data entry.
  • Other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a specialized field and one year research experience. Knowledge of modern research practices, the methods, resources, and standards thereof.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 2-years experience in a curatorial/collections management position
  • Master's degree in Heritage and Museum Sciences or Museum Studies
  • Strong emphasis on relevant experience with anthropological collections, particularly US Southern Plains and Greater Southwest collections


Pay Range
$19.47 - $25.29 - $31.15
