Job Summary:

The University of Colorado, College of Nursing, is seeking a Medical Assistant (Open Rank) for a full-time (1.0 FTE) benefits-eligible position at CU Center for Midwifery located in Longmont, CO. These positions will provide quality care to patients and provide some administrative support at the CU Center for Midwifery clinic located at 1551 Professional Lane STE 200, Longmont, CO 80501. Applicants should be educated and trained as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), or Medical Assistants (MAs).

Clinic Description:

The CU Center for Midwifery at Longmont is a private practice model that works collaboratively with the OB/GYN physicians on staff. We provide many services, including individualized care, alternative labor/birth options, and water birth, with referrals to childbirth education, lactation services, and provider groups within the system and community. We provide pregnancy, labor, and postpartum care as well as routine gynecological care, family planning, preconception, STI screening, and menopause care. The practice provides full-scope midwifery care to women at an outpatient clinic in Longmont with inpatient services at UCHealth Longs Peak HospitCFM believes that people benefit from personalized and comprehensive care that focuses on the patient while including the family in the plan of care. The MA will be part of a midwifery service that has a long and successful history within the University of Colorado system. The Center for Midwifery Longmont practice opened in 2017.

Supervision Received:

Direct supervision will be provided by the CNM Clinical Lead.

Examples of Duties Performed:

Medical Assistant Duties (70%):
  • Measures and documents vital signs; notifies provider of abnormal values.
  • Completes Medication Reconciliation in HER.
  • Records patient interview, history, and chief complaint in HER.
  • Prepares patients for examinations and procedures as needed and assists providers with procedures as needed.
  • Performs phlebotomy following lab procedure for the proper collection and handling of other lab specimens.
  • Performs basic wound care and first aid within scope.
  • Provides patient education with regard to office policies, lab results, medications, diagnoses, treatment, plan of care, and follow-up phone calls.
  • Prepares, administers, and electronically documents medications within scope (i.e., Depo-Provera) with provider authorization.
  • Administers immunizations, maintains immunization records, and completes annual immunization training within the timeline set by the supervisor.
  • Assist with inventory-taking, stocking, and sterilizing instruments.
  • Maintains CPR certification and uses CPR skills when required.
  • Maintains and disposes of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards.
  • Practices OSHA safety standards.
  • Performs accurate, legal, and ethical documentation (electronic/hard copy) at all times.
  • Assists with reporting test results to state and federal agencies, as appropriate.
  • Communicates with community partners as needed, including public health agencies, specialty/outside provider offices, local hospitals, and free-standing healthcare facilities.
  • Performs additional miscellaneous job duties as assigned.

Administrative Duties (20%):
  • Greets patients and families and completes standard patient check-in procedures in person and using Tele-health tools.
  • Triage calls, messages, and schedule appointments, electronically fax and upload records, outside reports, referrals, and orders.
  • Orders clinic and office supplies as needed.
  • Performs additional miscellaneous job duties as assigned.

Professional Standards (10%):
  • Upholds strict compliance with University and professional standards/policies.
  • Follows CDC guidelines for reporting illness and temperature, wearing a mask, and washing hands, and more during flu seasons and pandemics.

At the Medical Assistant I level, duties are limited in scope and are performed with guidance and direction from other positions in a training and development capacity. At the Medical Assistant I level, the focus is on developing medical assistant skills through basic functions of the position as outlined above, with the intent to promote after approximately 1 year of experience, and completion of specific training and performance evaluations/coaching.

At the Medical Assistant II level, duties are similar to those performed at level I, but the complexity of the job is different. In addition to the examples of work performed at all levels, positions at the Medical Assistant II level:
  • Process basic referrals and imaging study orders.
  • Process prior authorization requests.
  • Train and onboard newly hired MAs.
  • Perform clinical equipment quality checks routinely in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and compliance standards.



Work Location:

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite at the CU Center for Midwifery - Longmont, located at 1551 Professional Lane STE 200, Longmont, CO 80501.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Medical Assistant I:
  • Completion of an accredited medical assistant program.

Medical Assistant II:
  • Completion of an accredited medical assistant program.
  • One (1) year of experience working as a medical assistant.

Substitutions (All Levels):

Medical Assistant:
  • One (1) year of medical assistant experience may substitute for completion of an accredited program and is in addition to any required years of experience.

Nursing Aide / Licensed Practical Nurse / Emergency Medical Technician:
  • Completion of an accredited program, Colorado state licensure, and years of experience in any of these fields may substitute for medical assistant-specific requirements.

Current Registered Nursing Student:
  • Colorado State Certified Nurse Aid licensure may substitute for completion of an accredited medical assistant program.
  • Completion of Medical/Surgical Nursing I course with a passing grade may substitute for completion of an accredited medical assistant program.

Registered Nurse / Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) / Doctor of Medicine (MD):
  • Completion of an accredited program in any of these fields (or similar) may substitute for completion of an accredited medical assistant program.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Conditions of Employment (All Levels):
  • Must be willing and able to obtain current BLS/CPR certification by date of hire.
  • Must be willing and able to remain credentialed and ensure credentialing materials stay current.
  • Must be willing and able to work in a normal patient care environment with some exposure to biological hazards and infectious diseases.

Preferred Qualifications:

Medical Assistant I:
  • Experience with or formal training in handling bloodborne pathogens.
  • Experience with or formal training in complying with OSHA Biohazard Safety Standards.

Medical Assistant II:
  • Experience with or formal training in retrieving imaging studies, querying patient record database (i.e., COHRIO, or similar).
  • Experience with injections, vaccine administration, and documentation.
  • Experience in training new hires.
  • Experience with or formal training in phlebotomy and point-of-care testing.
  • Experience with or formal training in working with a population/subpopulation related to the job (OB-GYN).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (All Levels):
  • Ability to take direction and utilize a considerable degree of independent judgment and work priorities.
  • Exemplary organizational skills and ability to prioritize.
  • Unconditional ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Proficient in using various computer applications, EHR, and other tools to communicate with staff and complete appropriate clinical documentation.
  • Knowledge of current medical procedures and understanding of basic medical terminology.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to work cooperatively with patients, their families, and other members of the health care team.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as:
  • Medical Assistant I: $41,600 to $43,680
  • Medical Assistant II: $43,680 to $45,760

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
