Work Schedule: Due to nature of Athletics' schedules, incumbents must be willing to work nights, weekends, holidays, and work a flexed schedule. A flexed schedule requires employees to shift their regular workdays within the same week, such as taking a weekday off to work a Saturday event, while maintaining a 40 hour total.
Full Job Description: Sports Information Specialist

Under the general direction of the Dean, Kinesiology, Health, and Athletics, incumbents perform a variety of duties related to the maintenance of the District's multi-sport athletics website and social media platforms by producing, writing, and editing sports press releases, chronicling events, accomplishments, milestones and other news and statistics related to the college's intercollegiate sports teams.




Key Responsibilities:

  • Produces, researches, writes, and edits content for the athletic program's website and social media platforms. This includes information on all intercollegiate sports teams, including statistical information, as well as various alumni accomplishments, and historical achievements, milestones of student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
  • Writes daily sports releases on all teams and disseminates the information to various mass media organizations and digital outlets including X and Instagram.
  • Updates and inputs team rosters, schedules, and coaching biographies; maintains the daily team record board, posts games, matches and meet results, scores, and statistics.
  • Collects, produces, and disseminates statistics (including live stats) for home and various away games for all intercollegiate teams as required by the California Community College Athletic Association, the South Coast Conference, and the Southern California Football Association.
  • Serves as the media liaison for sports teams to the marketing department, cultivates relationships with external news media; sets up interviews by the media with coaches/student-athletes; and presents story ideas through press releases to increase media coverage of the teams; Coordinates "Media Day" for all intercollegiate teams.
  • Acts in a lead capacity in the college's press box and at game management tables, which includes securing appropriate positions for game tables, and the responsibility for the timing systems, scoreboard operator, digital statistician, and spotter during games, including the training of new crew members when required.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties including public address announcing and/or game statistician duties at individual home sports events for all intercollegiate teams, including live stats.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or a related discipline.
  • Two years of experience in sports information, sports communication, or as a writer or editor in a public information office.
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance policy.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or a related discipline.
  • Two years of experience as a sportswriter on a daily news outlet.
  • Two years of experience working in media relations in higher education in an institution that has an intercollegiate athletic program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive understanding of the methods and practices of presenting information through various mass media channels including newspaper, social media platforms, and the internet, and exceptional skill in writing accurate, compelling, and timely press releases, game recaps, athlete profiles, and feature articles.
  • Demonstrated experience with MS Office Suite, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Stat Crew, and Quark, and must be fluent in content management system (CMS) platforms and able to work quickly under tight post-game deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain and update a multi-sport athletics website with current scores, schedules, rosters, bios, records, and news, and competence in providing live updates (via website, social media, or livestream platforms), managing statistics, capturing highlights, and coordinating post-game interviews.
  • Skill in capturing and editing sports-related images and video content for use in press releases, web pages, and social channels, and strong working knowledge of rules, terminology, and statistical conventions for a wide range of intercollegiate sports.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage content calendars, event timelines, and overlapping seasonal demands across different sports; ability to review situations accurately and determine appropriate action according to established guidelines; ability to serve as a liaison between coaches, athletes, the public, and external media; and demonstrate clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, staff, and community.
