College/Department Information

The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University was founded nearly 200 years ago in 1828 as the nation's fifth public medical school. It is the state's flagship medical school and Augusta University's founding school. The Department of Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia houses several key research resources, including the Transgenic and Genome Editing Core, the Viral Vector Core, and a state-of-the-art microscopy facility. This facility features advanced imaging technologies such as multiphoton confocal microscopes, an N-STORM super-resolution microscope, light-sheet microscopes, and imaging flow cytometry, supporting cutting-edge research in cellular and molecular neuroscience.

Job Summary

The Postdoctoral Fellow's primary duties require advanced knowledge in neuroscience, as reflected by prolonged, specialized, intellectual instruction and study at the graduate and postgraduate level. These duties include but are not limited to: experiments using transgenic mouse models, cell and molecular assays, advanced imaging techniques, performing behavioral tests and small animal surgery, analyzing and interpreting data, and coordinating with PI on research plans. Research in the Stranahan lab involves animal models of progressive disease.

Responsibilities



Participate in project planning and development of research protocols while ensuring adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines.

Carry out behavioral tests according to established protocols in the lab.

Maintain detailed records of all procedures according to prescribed formatting.

Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature, summarize and evaluate findings, develop derivative applications of techniques reported in published research. Presents findings at scientific meetings locally, nationally, and internationally.

Perform immunohistochemistry, PCR, real time PCR, western blotting, tissue culture, brain surgeries, and microscopic analysis.

General management for sample inventories and lab supplies.



Required Qualifications

Ph.D. degree from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced knowledge in neuroscience, as reflected by prolonged, specialized, intellectual instruction and study at the graduate and postgraduate level.

Strong background in cellular neuroscience and/or basic research in the pathophysiology of obesity, with significant practical and conceptual expertise in transgenic mouse models, advanced imaging techniques, and in vivo assessment of rodent behavior and/or metabolism.

Expertise in immunohistochemistry and histology.
Expertise in molecular biology: PCR, Western, cloning, promoter reporter assays.
Expertise in small animal handling, behavioral testing, brain surgery, genotyping.
Expertise in tissue culture methods and techniques.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities



Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.

SKILLS

Excellent interpersonal, written; including legible writing, and verbal communication skills.

Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, visual acuity, and fine motor control.

ABILITIES

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to maintain a set schedule.

Ability to work safely around biological materials, wash glassware and deal appropriately with sharps, remembering storage locations, and monitoring lab inventory and supplies.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.

This position is (fully/partially) funded through external sources. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of these funds.
