The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position with a start date of August 10, 2026. This is a 9-month, non-renewable appointment.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy is located within the College of Arts and Sciences. The vision for our College, aligned with the university's strategic plan, is to ensure that our students graduate career-ready to meet the world's challenges, and that our faculty research and creative activity contribute to the public good. The Department of Physics and Astronomy currently has twelve faculty, including teaching and research faculty, with a 7-5 balance between physicists and astronomers. We offer BS and MS programs in Physics, and minor programs in Physics and in Astronomy. We teach introductory courses in Astronomy and Physics taken by students in a variety of majors across campus. Essential Functions
The primary responsibilities of this position are to teach survey Astronomy courses for non-majors, along with recitation sections and perhaps lab sections of introductory, algebra-based Physics courses; and to provide service at the department, college, and university levels. The typical teaching load will be 12 credit hours (four courses) per semester of in-person instruction.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Astronomy or a closely related discipline (e.g. Physics, etc.).
- Experience as an instructor of record or teaching assistant.
- Commitment to active learning pedagogies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in Astronomy or a closely related discipline (e.g. Physics, etc.). ABD will be considered if the requirements for the degree are completed by August 2026.
- Established background of teaching at the college level as an instructor of record.
- Demonstrated experience implementing active learning pedagogies.
