The Executive Director of Equal Opportunity and Title IX Coordinator provides strategic leadership for Boston University's equal opportunity, civil rights compliance, and prevention efforts. This position is responsible for advancing the University's commitment to equity and nondiscrimination, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws and fostering a campus environment free from discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, and retaliation.
The Executive Director oversees all facets of the Equal Opportunity Office (EOO), including:
- Resolution processes for discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct complaints;
- Disability accommodations for employees;
- Pregnancy-related accommodations for employees and students;
- The University's Bias Review Team; and
- Relevant training, prevention, and education initiatives.
The Executive Director serves as the University's Title IX Coordinator and primary point of contact for matters involving Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, ADA, and related laws. The role provides consultation to senior leadership, deans, managers, faculty, staff, and students to ensure compliance with applicable laws and University policies.
Essential Functions:
1. Strategic Leadership & Office Oversight
The Executive Director provides strategic leadership for the Equal Opportunity Office, overseeing operations, staffing, and long-term planning. The role manages and develops a team of equal opportunity and Title IX professionals and ensures the office's processes are consistent, neutral, and trauma informed. The Executive Director advises managers, supervisors, faculty, and staff on addressing concerns involving discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, retaliation, and accommodations, and provides guidance on reporting obligations and intervention steps. The position provides strategic oversight of case management systems, ensures protections against retaliation, and uses data and reporting to identify trends, inform decision making, and strengthen the University's overall response and prevention efforts.
2. Policy, Compliance & Title IX Coordination
The Executive Director serves as the University's Title IX Coordinator and ensures compliance with federal and state civil rights laws, including but not limited to Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, ADA, and Section 504. The role leads the development, implementation, and revision of policies and procedures related to equal opportunity, sexual misconduct, and accommodations, ensuring all processes meet legal requirements and best practices. The Executive Director monitors evolving regulations, advises leadership on compliance obligations, and oversees required training for faculty, staff, investigators, decision-makers, and other responsible employees. The role also partners with data and assessment staff to produce reports, dashboards, and surveys that evaluate and improve institutional response and prevention strategies.
3. Reasonable Accommodations & Accessibility
The Executive Director provides strategic oversight of disability accommodations for employees and applicants, and pregnancy and related accommodations for students. The role ensures that all accommodation requests are reviewed through a neutral, equitable, and thorough interactive dialogue process and that decisions are consistent with legal standards and University policy. The Executive Director partners with Human Resources, Occupational Health, the Office of the General Counsel, and other units to implement accommodations and resolve complex or sensitive cases. The position also addresses concerns related to accessibility of University programs, services, and facilities, coordinating with appropriate departments to remove barriers and ensure compliance with applicable disability laws.
4. Campus Engagement, Training & Prevention
The Executive Director serves as a key liaison to campus partners, representing the Equal Opportunity Office on committees and University initiatives related to equity, civil rights, accessibility, and sexual misconduct prevention. The role provides training, outreach, and guidance to academic and administrative units to support early intervention, promote reporting pathways, and strengthen response processes. The Executive Director collaborates closely with units across the University to enhance prevention efforts, address community concerns, and support a fair and inclusive living, learning, and working environment.
5. Cross Functional & Institutional Support
In addition to core responsibilities, the Executive Director position supports the broader institutional priorities through cross-functional coordination and support. Other duties may be assigned to meet evolving University needs.
