About the Opportunity

The Robert J. & Nancy D. Carney Institute for Brain Science is committed to supporting research and facilitating collaborations in brain science across the Brown University community and beyond. Our mission is to promote discovery and innovation in brain science by supporting a diverse community of experimentalists, theorists, engineers, and clinical scientists. We do this by recruiting and retaining world-class faculty, creating an outstanding collaborative training environment, seeding innovative projects, supporting collaborative teams, and raising the visibility and reputation of Carney researchers.

Responsibilities

This position provides critical administrative and event support to enable the Carney Institute for Brain Science to meet its goal of promoting interdisciplinary brain science research among more than 200 Brown faculty members in 20+ departments. The position provides administrative support for the institute, including institute purchasing, facilities requests, managing space access requests, and providing support for Carney Institute space occupants (administrative offices and faculty/labs on the floor). The Carney Institute hosts many events and seminars regularly throughout the year, in support of its objective to build community and catalyze new research directions. This position is the administrative point of contact with members of the Carney community (including directors, center directors, individual faculty and trainees) who are leading workshops and events. This position coordinates all meeting logistics, including scheduling, reserving space, preparing materials, ordering catering, and advertising. Finally, the incumbent also provides administrative support in Workday related to grants expenditures, and financial and HR processes, including receipt processing, creating purchase orders, travel reimbursements and provides administrative and scheduling support to the Director of Research Strategy, and Associate Directors of Finance and Administration, Communications, and Development and Training.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Required: Bachelor's degree and 1-2 years' experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in event planning or support is required.
  • Experience in a University or not-for-profit environment is preferred.
  • Experience with financial operations and purchasing is preferred.
  • Experience working with Workday is preferred.

  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information in a professional, discreet and diplomatic manner.
  • Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment.
  • Excellent computer skills, including fluency with Microsoft Office suite and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced setting.
  • Proficiency with Zoom, and other virtual video conference platforms.
