PURPOSE:

Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications, the Director of Marketing leads the strategy, execution, and oversight of university-wide marketing and brand communications. The position develops, manages, and measures campaigns and content that promote Cal State Monterey Bay to prospective students, donors, alumni, and the general public.

The Director oversees staff and student employees across three integrated units: Marketing, Brand, and Social Media, Digital Marketing, and Digital Content Photography and Videography.

The role includes responsibility for brand consistency and quality across the institution, including the University brand, University Corporation brand, Foundation of CSUMB brand, and Athletics brand.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Leads university-wide digital marketing and brand communications strategy.
  • Oversees three functional teams: marketing/brand/social media, digital content, and photo/video.
  • Supervises, supports, and represents staff and student employees across all marketing units.
  • Develops and executes campaigns across web, email, social media, mobile apps, and other digital platforms.
  • Directs CSUMB's email tools and campaign strategy, including content development, testing, performance monitoring, and CRM integration.
  • Oversees mobile application content strategy, governance, and audience targeting in alignment with institutional priorities and accessibility standards.
  • Serves as CSUMB's institutional brand manager, ensuring consistent visual and messaging standards across university units and affiliated organizations.
  • Provides creative direction and content review for brand-aligned campaigns.
  • Oversees the department's ticketing system and project planning processes to ensure timely execution of requests and deliverables.
  • Coordinates with the Public Information Officer (PIO) and News and Information Manager to promote university events, announcements, and strategic initiatives.
  • Manages workflow systems, project timelines, and production schedules.
  • Collaborates with Enrollment, Advancement, Athletics, and others to support strategic outreach.
  • Directs SEO, analytics, web accessibility, and content QA efforts.
  • Leads implementation of marketing technology and automation tools.
  • Partners with outside vendors, agencies, and internal teams to deliver integrated campaigns.

Other Functions:
  1. Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
  2. May be required to work evenings or weekends as necessary, potentially with short notice to manage urgent operations and crisis communications needs or during a campus emergency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
    • Advanced understanding of brand strategy, digital marketing, and multimedia content development.
    • Experience managing teams, campaigns, and cross-unit communications.
    • Strong writing, editing, and creative direction skills.
    • Proficiency in marketing platforms (CRM, CMS, analytics, SEO, mobile apps, email).
    • Demonstrated ability to lead complex, multi-stakeholder projects.
    • Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and organizational skills.
    • Knowledge of accessibility standards and legal compliance for digital content.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or related field.
    • Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in digital marketing or brand communications.
    • At least two years of experience supervising professional or student staff.
    • A master's degree may substitute for one year of experience.
    • Must have the ability to successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program; must have the ability to provide proof of eligibility to lawfully operate a motor vehicle in the state of California.

SPECIALIZED SKILLS:
    • Experience managing marketing operations, creative teams, and cross-functional planning systems.
    • Expertise in content marketing, accessibility, mobile communications, and web optimization.
    • Demonstrated ability to build and measure campaign performance tied to strategic goals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:
    • Master's degree in marketing, communications, or a related field.
    • Experience in higher education marketing and branding.
    • Familiarity with Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Pathify, Asana, and other marketing technology tools.
    • Technical fluency with Microsoft Office Professional Suite; Google G-Suite; Oracle-PeopleSoft/ Common Management System or equivalent information systems; drives; and internet browsers.
    • Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB's market region and Founding Vision Statement.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. Requires travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
