Lead Instructional Designer

Job Summary

The Lead Instructional Designer for the University of Utah's David Eccles School of Business Online Development team provides strategic leadership for the design, development, and continuous improvement of online and hybrid learning experiences. This position works closely with faculty, instructional designers, multimedia specialists, and program staff to ensure the delivery of high-quality, engaging, and effective online courses.

The Lead Instructional Designer serves as a senior member of the Online Development team, overseeing instructional design processes, managing course development projects, mentoring and supervising instructional design staff, and promoting best practices in online pedagogy and educational technology. The incumbent provides consultation, training, and support to faculty while ensuring quality standards and project timelines are met across multiple programs.

Responsibilities
Leadership and Team Management
  • Provide leadership, direction, and day-to-day supervision for instructional design staff and related team members.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop instructional designers to support professional growth and continuous improvement.
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, and workload allocation for team members.
  • Establish and maintain instructional design standards, workflows, and quality assurance processes.
  • Foster a collaborative, innovative, and service-oriented team culture.



Course Development and Faculty Partnership
  • Lead the design, development, revision, and quality review of online and hybrid courses for the David Eccles School of Business.
  • Partner with faculty to prepare, structure, storyboard, and organize course content for online delivery.
  • Serve as the primary instructional design consultant for complex or high-profile course development projects.
  • Deliver detailed course development plans, timelines, and module outlines while ensuring project milestones are achieved.
  • Guide faculty in the implementation of evidence-based instructional strategies and best practices in online learning.
  • Support faculty in leveraging educational technologies to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.

Project and Process Management
  • Manage a portfolio of course development projects from planning through implementation and quality review.
  • Coordinate resources, timelines, and priorities across instructional design staff and faculty stakeholders.
  • Monitor project progress and proactively identify and resolve challenges that may impact timelines or quality.
  • Develop and refine processes that improve efficiency, scalability, and consistency across online program offerings.
  • Analyze course development metrics and recommend improvements to support program goals.

Faculty Development and Training
  • Design and facilitate workshops, training sessions, and professional development opportunities related to online teaching and course design.
  • Train faculty on instructional technologies, course development processes, and online teaching best practices.
  • Promote innovative approaches to teaching and learning through consultation and ongoing support.

Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement
  • Establish and oversee quality standards for online and hybrid course development.
  • Conduct course reviews and provide actionable feedback to faculty and instructional design staff.
  • Stay current with emerging trends, technologies, accessibility standards, and best practices in online education.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional, accreditation, accessibility, and quality standards.

Service and Collaboration
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with faculty, academic leadership, and campus partners.
  • Represent the Online Development team on school and university committees as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the success of Eccles Online Programs through professionalism, innovation, and exceptional service.

Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 10 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 8 years of directly related work experience.

Preferences
  • Demonstrated experience leading instructional design teams in higher education or online learning environments.
  • Experience developing graduate business, professional, or executive education programs.
  • Expertise in instructional design models, quality assurance frameworks, and online learning best practices.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects to successful deadline-oriented completion.
  • Strong understanding of learning management systems, multimedia production workflows, and educational technology tools.
  • Experience providing strategic guidance to faculty and academic leaders on online program development.
  • Commitment to innovation, continuous improvement, and student-centered learning design.
