Information about the School, College, University, and Community

School of the Built Environment

The School of the Built Environment (SBE) capitalizes on the integration between architecture and construction management, where students in the two disciplines learn and collaborate, much as architects and construction managers do in their careers. The SBE offers undergraduate and graduate programs through two departments, the Department of Architecture and Environmental Design, and the Department of Construction Management, both housed in Kokosing Hall. The Master of Architecture program is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), and the B.S. in Construction Management is accredited by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE). The SBE has 16 full-time faculty and staff, complemented with professional adjunct instructors; they teach and mentor approximately 500 students. The SBE has experienced substantial enrollment growth during the last five years, more than doubling in size since 2022. The School Director would lead a distinctive school with accredited professional programs, conducive facilities, and strong industry connections.

College of Engineering and Innovation

The SBE is one of three schools in the College of Engineering and Innovation (CEI), alongside the School of Aviation and the School of Engineering. Together they offer 21 undergraduate and graduate programs. The College has made experiential learning a pillar of its identity: the CEI's nationally accredited cooperative education program has placed students with more than 5,000 companies since its founding. The new Technology Engineering Innovation Center adds collaborative labs and industry grade equipment to the College's facilities. The College is also in a period of growth: the School of Aviation runs Ohio's largest flight program through a partnership with the Bowling Green Flight Center and an airport on campus, and the School of Engineering, reconfigured in 2023, has added degrees in robotics, mechanical and manufacturing, and electronic and computer engineering.

The College has developed a statement of vision, mission, and core values to guide its work. Its vision states that "The College aspires to lead by driving the societal, economic and environmental vitality of the region, the nation, and the world through creative and impactful engagement in teaching, experiential learning, scholarship and research." Its mission reads: "The College cultivates a vibrant learning and scholarly environment founded on collaborative programs and industry partnerships that engage our students and our community in critical thinking, creative problem-solving and lifelong learning." Six core values put that mission into practice: a student experience centered on success and career readiness; a collaborative community that recognizes and develops the strengths of its faculty and staff; multidisciplinary, accredited curricula strengthened by practical experience tied to industry and by cooperative education; fundamental and applied research conducted with students, industry, and the community; facilities that integrate emerging technologies to support teaching, workforce development, and research; and partnerships that prepare professionals and inspire the next generation of innovators.

Bowling Green State University

The CEI is part of Bowling Green State University (BGSU), a comprehensive, high research university in northwestern Ohio. As a "Public University for the Public Good," BGSU is committed to driving economic and cultural vitality in the region and beyond. Through innovative teaching, research and creative activities, BGSU fosters a collaborative and inclusive learning community where inspired ideas, knowledge and achievements support the region, state and nation. More than 760 talented and passionate faculty members teach across more than 200 undergraduate majors and programs, 17 doctoral programs, and 57 master's programs. A focus on promoting research, scholarship, and creative activities has resulted in a significant increase in extramural funding over the past several years.

Guided by Forward, BGSU's strategic plan, the University is focused on redefining student success. For the fifth year in a row, The Wall Street Journal ranks BGSU as the No. 1 public university in the Midwest that students would choose again. BGSU also holds the Wall Street Journal distinction of being the No. 1 public university in Ohio for the student experience.

Bowling Green, the county seat and largest city of Wood County, is consistently ranked one of America's best college towns. Its historic downtown is walkable and rich with local cafs and shops. Toledo is 30 minutes and Detroit is about an hour away, with Columbus and Cleveland within easy reach by car. Interstate 75 directly connects the city to both the Detroit and Toledo airports.
