In compliance with SB 1162, Western University of Health Sciences is providing a pay scale for this position. The pay scale reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position. Within this range, the individual pay is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, and work location. Please note that the compensation details listed reflects the base salary only.

Job Summary
The employee reports to the Directors and manager of the Office of Animal Resources. Under minimal supervision. In this role, you will provide support to the animal resources team including developing and implementing proper processes, personnel training, providing skilled care, and handling laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner. Primary working areas include standard housing areas as well as specialized areas including, but not limited to, USDA housing areas, bio-hazardous areas, and animal colonies requiring specialized procedures. Also responsible for limited supervisory duties including direction and oversight of work but excluding discipline. The employee will ensure that the facilities and personnel are in compliance with standards set forth by NIH and USDA as well as the IACUC and Institutional SOPs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Individuals must possess the knowledge, as well as the following skills and abilities, or be able to perform the essential functions of the job after a reasonable amount of training, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. Supports the director/Manager in overseeing the operations and goals of a department. They collaborate with the director/manager to coordinate daily activities, ensure compliance with regulations and internal policies, and monitor the achievement of objectives. With experience in performance and operations management, an assistant possesses knowledge of relevant regulations and quality standards. They demonstrate excellent organizational and leadership skills, proficiently use MS Office and relational databases and possess strong communication and problem-solving abilities. Must be able to work with various species of animals; must disclose any known and existing animal allergies or other medical conditions that would preclude the individual from discharging her/his responsibilities; individuals to be in good physical condition since the position requires regular physical activity such as standing, walking, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting.

Must ensure that their facility complies with all animal welfare guidelines and standards set forth by the Animal Welfare Act, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUC), and the National Institute of Healths Guide for the Use and Care of Laboratory Animals. United States of Department of Agriculture (USDA) Facilities are subject to inspections to ensure the maintenance of proper conditions.

Job Duties
1. This individual serves as an essential part of the Universitys animal research program by having primary, daily contact with the research animal subjects and continuing responsibility for them.
2. Has direct access to contact respective principal investigators in case of any animal health emergencies.
3. Maintain database records and log animal husbandry; monitor and logs animal health daily.
4. Monitors, and logs animal health daily.
5. Facilitating reproduction of animals in the colony, when required.
6. Assists principal investigators with any special animal care needs in accordance with protocols, experiments, and projects.
7. Assigns work activities to less experienced Lab Animal Technicians.
8. Will lead or guide the work of student employees.

Job Duties
1. Keeps facilities clean and sanitary.
2. Has a primary role as an animal facilities site supervisor on weekends and holidays, assisting the animal care manager on all weekdays.
3. Serves in a security capacity for the animal facilities during working hours.
4. With the guidance of the veterinarian aids to make decisions as to the treatment of sick animals in accord with each principal investigators needs.
5. Provides training, mentoring & work direction to junior staff, assisting with problems as necessary
6. Quality assurance for all vivariums equipment: autoclaves, cage washing, etc recording the results

Job Duties
1. Develop and follow SOPs for the vivarium
2. Monitoring the vivarium sentinels including testing and ordering.
3. Receive, inspect, and put away incoming animals
4. Assist with surgeries when needed.
5. Provides coverage for the shortage of staff in husbandry operations & other areas within the facility.
6. Administers prescribed medications.

Job Duties
1. Maintains accurate animal health records.
2. Provides pre-and post-surgical care of animals. Conducts daily animal health checks.
3. Establishes, monitors, and maintains non-animal supplies and animal inventories.
4. Following guidelines perform euthanasia
5. Ensuring compliance with regulations and internal policies. Orders laboratory supplies and pharmaceuticals
6. Organize workflow and ensure that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks
7. Monitor employee productivity and provide constructive feedback and coaching
8. Responsible for the development and management of a breeding colony
9. Assists with SOP preparation for procedures and training

Describe Work Environment
The work environment is indoors. Noise levels are minimal but are dependent on the animals. May be exposed to bedding, where dust, hay, and other allergens exist. Work in a Lab setting with exposure to animals/biohazards/chemicals.
