Assistant Professor of Environmental Science

Position Summary
The Assistant Professor of Environmental Science teaches undergraduate-level core and elective courses in environmental science, physical geography, geology, earth science, soil conservation, water quality, oceanography and contributes to mentoring students, including those from underrepresented backgrounds.

The responsibilities for the Assistant Professor of Environmental Science include teaching and developing undergraduate labs and/or lectures in meteorology and environmental science. Teaching responsibilities also include instruction of majors from other science disciplines and non-science majors. The Assistant Professor of Environmental Science develops and maintains an active and ongoing research program. The Assistant Professor of Environmental Science participates in outreach and contributes to departmental, school, and university service. In these and other ways, the faculty member helps to develop innovative approaches to enhancing student engagement, increasing diversity, and expanding collaborations with community and business partners.


This position is considered a Responsible Employee under Title IX federal regulations and Mandatory Reporter under Texas state law and The UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy. As a Mandatory Reporter, this position requires you as the employee to promptly report any incident that you witness or receive information about violating Title IX. These reporting responsibilities are set out in the UIW Sexual Misconduct Policy.

Essential Functions
The Assistant Professor of Environmental Science is responsible for coordinating, developing, and teaching Environmental Science lectures and laboratories. The Assistant Professor of Environmental Science teaches introductory courses as well as upper-division courses in their area of expertise. Official duties and responsibilities of faculty members at the University include teaching, scholarship, service and professional activities. In all matters, faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of professional ethics consistent with the UIW Mission.

-Expertise in one or more of the relevant areas, including, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Geology, Watershed /Aquatic Sciences, Geography, Forestry, Rangeland Science, Ecology, or Environmental Sustainability;
-Ability to lead field trips and perform field experiments in environmental science;
-Possess a strong commitment to the success of the UIW Environmental Science program, scholarship, developing a research program in their area of expertise with undergraduate student participation, and community service activities;
-Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;
-Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA

Required Education
Ph.D. in environmental science or a closely related field

Required Work Experience
Two (2) years of experience teaching undergraduates which may be a composite of teaching assistantships, part-time teaching, and full-time teaching

Preferred Qualifications
-Demonstrated commitment to teaching a diverse population of students at the undergraduate college level using computers and advanced technology to enhance the educational experience of students;
-Demonstrated knowledge of Geographical Information Systems and or Environmental Impact Asssessment/Remediation;
-Knowledge of environmental system numerical modeling
