System Administration, which also houses the Office of the President, is located in the uptown neighborhood of Denver with a few smaller offices located on the campuses.  Many of our departments support the educational and research missions of the four University of Colorado campuses, but System Administration is not considered a campus. The Office of University Relations is responsible for all official public communication regarding the Office of the President, which includes responding to requests from the news media for information, interviews and official statements. The office also directs the president's community tours and outreach, manages the president's regional business and community councils and oversees the university's special events and outreach with targeted communities. University Relations also produces the weekly CU Connections, news and information for CU Faculty and Staff, oversees the systemwide branding initiative and the implementation of an online alumni communications tool, among many other print, web and social media projects.

Position Summary:

The Communications Coordinator provides specialized and sophisticated administrative, clerical, and communications support for the Vice President for Communications and the University Relations team. 

The Vice President relies on the Communications Coordinator to set up and lead effective and efficient processes to focus time and effort strategically and achieve key department goals. The Communications Coordinator also provides key support to the Vice President in handling sensitive and issue-based communications at the executive level of the university. 

This position will coordinate and schedule meetings, manage the calendar for the Vice President, assist in the preparation of presentations, memos, and institutional replies on sensitive topics, and facilitating effective interaction within and outside the university. The Communications Coordinator will handle a wide variety of activities including confidential and sensitive matters. 

The Communications Coordinator will work to establish and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external constituencies. This position often acts as a first point of contact and appropriately assess and route inquiries from varying campuses, departments, and partners. 

The individual in the Communications Coordinator position must be professional, organized, flexible, and self-directed. The individual should also have strong interpersonal skills and be an effective communicator. This position will develop an in-depth understanding of the priorities, needs, and roles of the Vice President and it will need to maintain strict confidentiality and interact with appropriateness to all levels of the organization. 

This position reports to the Vice President for Communications and is exempt from the State of Colorado Classified Staff system.  

Where You Will Work:

This role is eligible for a hybrid schedule, working some days from home and some days in office at our 1800 Grant Street location.

Duties & Responsibilities:

 

Duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: 
  • Assists the University Relations team in coordinating CU's interactions with media and other public organizations focused on higher education-related issues.
  • Drafts and creates concise fact sheets, background materials, position papers, and talking points for use by the University Relations team and university leaders.
  • Coordinates telephone and office equipment support and maintenance and performs general office and administrative duties.
  • Assists in creating University Relations reports.
  • Assists in booking travel and updating calendars for Vice President for Communication.
  • Assists in reconciling travel expenses for Vice President for Communication.
  • Assists with social media creation and website content updates as assigned.
  • Creates documents such as agendas, campus maps, and duplicates of letters as assigned.
  • Conducts and synthesizes research on university and policy issues to assist the University Relations team's work.
  • Continuously updates media and campus contact lists.
  • Monitor various social media accounts for proactive communications.
  • Track communications strategies for the new CU marketing campaign.
  • Other administrative tasks as assigned.

Salary: The anticipated hiring range has been established at $53,000-$55,000.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Please ensure your resume includes any and all relevant experience to be accurately assessed against these qualifications.  You must meet all minimum requirements listed at the time of application to be considered for this role.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education, or equivalent professional experience (professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis)
  • Three (3) years of professional experience working in an office setting providing administrative support to a department and/or manager or director

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five (5) years of experience working in an office setting, as indicated above
  • Experience with marketing, communications, and public relations
  • Fluent in writing and speaking Spanish

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

To be successful in this position, candidates will need the following:
  • Basic knowledge of media relations and television, radio, online and print media outlets - specifically in Colorado.
  • Ability to use technology and software, including personal cell phone applications and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
