The Geospatial Analysis and Mapping Laboratory (GAMLab) provides resources and services to visualize, explore, analyze, and propose solutions to human-environmental challenges using Geographic Information Science and Technology. The GAMLab enables and supports the geospatial research activities of CU Denver's Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences (GES) faculty and students, in addition to facilitating collaborations between GES and other members of academic, government, private, and community sectors.

The GAMLab offers mapping, visualization, and analysis services to both internal and external clients, including map production, informational graphics, digitizing, data compilation, spatial analysis, and consulting.

The Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences (GES) is seeking a candidate to direct, maintain, and manage the Geospatial Analysis and Mapping Laboratory (GAMLab). The GAMLab Program Director position is a staff position within GES and will report directly to the Chair of the department. The successful candidate will be dynamic, innovative, and possess an entrepreneurial spirit to advance the capacity and mission of the lab. In addition, the candidate will build new and maintain current relationships with faculty in GES and affiliated departments, as well as develop awareness of the lab and its services with the Denver and the Colorado Front Range communities through networking activities and events.
(GAMLab) Program Director - What you will do:
Service Center Management

The GAMLab Program Director serves as the primary manager of the (GAMLab) service center. Common duties include managing fee-for service contracts and documentation, building professional service agreements, MOUs, scope of work documents, billable hours, and invoicing; supervising, hiring, and mentoring student hourly workers to support with managing the lab and its projects; providing subject matter expertise, consulting, and other geospatial or cartographic services; and coordinating with other staff on managing service center accounts, invoicing, transfers, service rates, cost-studies.
GAMLab Management

The GAMLab Program Director also serves as the primary manager of its space and facilities. These duties include coordinating student and faculty access, registration, and workstation assignment for research and service center project projects; developing and implementing lab policies, processes, and workflows for lab use; managing staffing, project management, outreach, and event planning; managing lab budget and expenditures; assessing and purchasing lab supplies, hardware, software, and printing equipment; managing the GAMLab's budget and expenditures; troubleshooting and coordinating with IT staff on hardware and software maintenance, management and trouble-shooting; and assessing new and updated software and applications for potential lab use.
Communications & Outreach

The GAMLab Program Director serves as the primary representative the GAMLab and its work, serving as a liaison between the GAMLab and the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences (GES), the FAST Lab (CU Denver's geospatial teaching lab), the College of Liberal Arts and Science (CLAS) and other colleges on campus, as well as to internal and external clients. To serve the missions of the GAM Lab, the Program Director should develop and implement outreach strategies to the Denver professional community, organize advertising, maintain social media accounts, plan GAMLab-specific events and coordinate lab participation in other campus events. As time allows, the Director may also plan and implement workshops and training for researchers on geospatial methods and technologies and co-plan events with other academic groups on promoting geospatial science research and education.
Conditions of Employment
  • This position follows a hybrid work structure, where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed, based on the demands of specific tasks. Working from the office is encouraged when working on tasks that require a high degree of collaboration and/or supervision of employees.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $76,150.40 - $ 76,663.00 (prorated for .8 FTE).

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)
  • A Master's degree in Geography, Geospatial Science, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, or related field from an accredited institution.
  • One (1) year of research and/or project management experience following completion of a graduate degree in the fields of cartographic design, geospatial analysis, and/or remote sensing analysis.

Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/professional experience may be substituted for the master's degree on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)
  • One (1) or more years of experience working in a university, 2 -4 year institutional campus, or higher education environment.
  • Two (2) years of experience with cartographic design and/or geospatial analysis.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Expert knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate revenue-producing activities through provision of external grants and contracts.

  • Familiarity with GIS professional community in Denver and Colorado.
  • Strong familiarity with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and FRPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) policies and protocols.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
