Job Summary:
The College of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics seeks an experienced Instructional Classroom Support Technician 4 to provide general technician support to our Department of Design and manage the 4D Lab, Makerspace, located at the Catalyst Building. Our beautiful, new Catalyst Building is located at 601 E. Riverside in Spokane.

This position will provide general technician support for the department, supervise 4D Lab staff, and have responsibility in planning, developing, and implementing all aspects of the 4D Lab.
The person hired for this position must have demonstrated experience and/or ability to perform the following essential functions:
  1. Work independently without supervision.
  2. Configure/troubleshoot/repair all available equipment.
  3. Work closely with faculty to setup labs and lab projects.
  4. Maintain and update equipment inventory to include research for appropriate equipment and purchase.
  5. Lead workshops, for faculty, staff, students, and the public.
  6. Review and approve all project proposals.
  7. In consultation with Design department staff, prepare and administer lab support budgets; prepare cost estimates, fiscal projections, and financial reports.
  8. Grant proposal preparation and collaboration with department faculty.
  9. Perform related work as required.
  10. May teach laboratory portion of selected courses.
  11. Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse need, including universal access, of our student, faculty, staff, and the public.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree in a related field. Design or Fine Arts degrees are preferred
  • Devotion and sensitivity in serving diverse student and community populations.
  • Minimum three years experience in the principles and skills related to Makerspace operations and best practices, including the maintenance and troubleshooting of digital fabrication equipment.
  • Commitment to the research and integration of newly developed technologies.
  • Relevant experience in Makerspace technologies and applications related to 3D modeling and printing, inkjet printing, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, pen plotting, and risograph printing.
  • Minimum three years experience overseeing, training, and supervising student employees.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presenting complex, technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated skills in utilizing technology in support of innovation, research, and education.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree in a related field. Design or Fine Arts degrees are preferred.
  • Evidence of active professional practices and creative project management.
  • Evidence of successful undergraduate teaching experience.

Job Duties:

Responsibility / Duty: Faculty/Instructional Classroom Support
  • Coordinates functions related to instructional support with the university.
  • Assist faculty in the setup of projects and demonstrations, preparation of equipment, software, kits, samples, and other tasks.
  • Lead workshops to teach faculty and staff the basic principles of media development.
  • Lead community workshops and support faculty-led community workshops.
  • Participate in conferences, workshops, and demonstrations.
  • Teach laboratory portion of selected classes.
  • Plan new approaches to educational problems.
  • Configure, maintain, and trouble shoot equipment.

Responsibility / Duty: Administrative Duties
  • Purchase, maintain inventory, and surplus of discipline specific parts, equipment, materials, and consumables. Note that purchasing may include obtaining costs, proposing various options, evaluating possibilities, and working with faculty and staff to determine the best solution in coordination with administrative staff.
  • Maintain lab and facilities documentation.
  • Manage lab equipment leases.
  • Coordinate warranty support and repair of equipment under department contract.
  • Manage subscription services and software licenses for all lab contracts and vendors including contacting and facilitating vendor support, coordination with department administrative staff for procurement and renewals, and coordination with university IT for deployments.

Conditions of Employment:
  • The department of Design and 4D Lab are located in the Catalyst Building located between downtown Spokane and the University District. Occasional visits to Easterns Cheney campus may be needed.
  • This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.
  • All new employees will comply with EWU Immunization Policy 602-02 and provide proof of immunity or vaccination to MMR before beginning work at EWU. Waivers for the immunization requirements are available for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs.

Salary Information: $53,664 - $62,934. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on education, experience and skills.
