The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Chemistry Instructor, Foothill College.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

Under the direction of the Dean of the Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering Division, instruct community college lecture and laboratory chemistry courses to a diverse student population. Teach Organic Chemistry along with the full range of lower division chemistry courses taught at Foothill College as needed. Plan, organize, and oversee curriculum development with special attention to the laboratory. Set-up and perform light maintenance of laboratory instrumentation such as GC, GC-MS, IR, NMR, and UV-VIS spectroscopy. Prepare laboratory schedules and participate in collaborative efforts to establish protocols that promote safety in the handling of hazardous chemicals. Participate in mentoring of part-time faculty. Assist in the growth and success of students through careful preparation of instructional materials, application of effective teaching methodologies, and timely communication of critical feedback on assignments and discussions.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, developing goals and metrics for student learning outcomes, evaluating mastery of course content and laboratory performance, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural
  2. backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  3. Master's degree in chemistry OR bachelor's degree in chemistry or biochemistry AND master's degree in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology, or geochemistry OR the equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Demonstrated academic scholarship in the theoretical foundations of physical and organic chemistry.
  2. Teaching experience in majors' organic chemistry lecture and laboratory courses.
  3. Extensive experience working and/or teaching in the chemistry laboratory, including the following:
  4. Hands-on experience with the maintenance and operation of instruments used in community college and research laboratories, specifically IR, GC, GC-MS, NMR, and UV-VIS spectroscopy.
  5. Skill with common wet laboratory techniques.
  6. Experience with and knowledge of current hazardous waste handling in a chemistry laboratory.
  7. Experience maintaining a safe laboratory environment in compliance with safety rules and regulations.
  8. Familiarity and facility in use of technology as a teaching aid in the classroom.
  9. Demonstrated collaboration and leadership skills.

  3. The ability to motivate and develop students' critical thinking.
  4. Ability to communicate articulately and effectively with individuals of diverse age, gender, ethnicity, educational and economic backgrounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  1. Skill in routine safe handling of hazardous chemicals and chemical waste.
  2. Endurance within a classroom setting, teaching students while standing, sitting, or walking throughout the classroom.
  3. Use of aids such as whiteboards, posters, bulletin boards, overhead projector, computers, and other technology.
  4. Retrieval, use, storage, and light lifting of teaching material, including books, equipment, assignments, etc.
  5. Vision sufficient to read various materials and to monitor student safety in the laboratory
  6. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person.
  7. Adaptive to differing learning styles and responsive to behaviors (i.e. monitoring, evaluating, and managing both appropriate and inappropriate student behaviors.)
  8. Address stressful events, created by hostile students by (a) maintaining emotional control, (b) listening without judgment or retaliation, (c) reasoning objectively and consistently, (d) keeping at the forefront the best interests of the student, and (e) maintaining professionalism and due process.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, Tenure-track position; 10 months per year.
