Lab Systems Administrator
Simmons College

The incumbent is responsible for supporting all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the computer labs and computer classrooms at Simmons College. The incumbent will work hand-in-hand with the endpoint systems administrators to ensure that the labs are functioning to the standards of the College as well as to the satisfaction of the faculty and students. This position is also responsible for managing and mentoring the student lab monitors.

Essential Functions
1. Operations – 35%
Oversee day-to-day operations of the computer labs and classrooms across the College;
Respond to all technology and software related issues in the labs and advise on or implement solutions;
◦ Promote lab technology best practices to students and faculty
Analyze solutions for lab usage tracking for the purpose of resource management;
Oversee hardware and software upgrades;
Implement technology directives dictated by departmental curriculum.

Supervision - 25%
Manage Student Lab Monitors;
Develop and promote discipline specific Lab Orientation required of all incoming students;
Promote planning and development of discipline-specific technology orientations for faculty, staff and students;
Support academic and professional development of student workers.

3. Support - 15%
Liaise with appropriate technology and administrative offices in the College for planning upgrades, support, and integration with College systems;
Provide point-of-use instruction to faculty and students;
Counsel faculty on instructional technology strategies in and out of the classroom;
Implement systems design for the computer labs and related technologies.

4. Research, Reporting, and Documentation - 25%
Research industry standards, practices, and trends;
Generate recurring reports on lab usage and technology trends;
Direct development of documentation and technology resources including web-based and print materials as well as formal and informal training modules or presentations;
Benchmark use of technology with:
◦ Technology used throughout the campus
◦ Industry standards and practices
◦ Other colleges with similar design and communications computer labs
Participate in college-wide planning initiatives and accreditation processes.

Education
BA required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Minimum of 3 years of experience.
Knowledge of department and college policies, procedures, and practices with the ability to answer work related questions; and/or interpret and apply these guidelines correctly in various situations.
Knowledge of Technology Policy.
Familiarity with a wide variety of personal computer systems and peripherals, including installation in freestanding and networked environments.
Familiarity with microcomputer programming languages and Internet applications.
Familiarity with commercially available operating system, desktop publishing, word processing, database, presentation, organization and spreadsheet software packages.
Working knowledge of networking concepts, routers, switches, hubs, and servers.
Working knowledge of PC-related hardware, chip and board installation, and repair techniques and other instructional technology.
Familiarity with multimedia applications and computer peripherals such as scanners, CD-ROM, video projectors, audio systems, and interactive whiteboard systems.
Well-developed interpersonal skills, including ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other employees at all levels.
Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Able to remain current in any emerging technologies that may be applied to the classroom.
Able to conduct workshops intended to instruct faculty in use of classroom technology

Work Schedule
This is a 40 hour position with a schedule of Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm.
