College/Department Information
Located conveniently in Augusta's downtown medical community, Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home provides continuous professional nursing care to veterans of Georgia who have served in the armed forces during war times. The home is owned and funded by the Georgia Department of Veterans Service and operated through an interagency agreement with Augusta University. Through this association, Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home is considered a leader in the area of geriatric educational training for Augusta University.

Job Summary
The Office Assistant performs a variety of clerical duties involving the maintenance and processing of patient's medical charts. Responsible for organizing patient charts/records for admissions, transfers and discharges. Maintains and organizes all forms needed on the nursing units. Relays messages and patient request to appropriate personnel. Provide customer service and maintain professionalism when interacting with others. Utilizes computers, calculators, printers and label makers. Schedule appointments for patients as needed.

Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:

Records - Prepare, process, and maintain a variety of patient, unit, and nursing home records to reflect admissions, treatments, transfers, discharges, patient census, and related data

Supplies - Orders Office Assistant supplies and personal items for patients; Receives and distributes mail, flowers and personal items delivered to the unit for patients.

Tests - Prepare requisitions/forms for diets, consultations, and laboratory test as prescribed by the physician

Charting - Maintain patient charts, transcribes physician's orders, vital signs, weights, and other information to charts and computer; Informs nurses of changes in physician orders and follow up on noted charted orders

Phone - Answer patient calls and relay to appropriate staff; Answer telephone and deliver messages; Arranges appointments with clinics for patients and request transportation for appointments if needed

Other Duties - Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent from a recognized State or Federal accrediting organization with a minimum of one year experience performing secretarial/clerical assistant duties in a professional office setting.

Preferred Qualifications
Moderate computer skills and medical terminology preferred. One year experience in a clinical setting or equivalent combination of training an experience. Experience with PointClickCare EMR prefered.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
KNOWLEDGE
Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of nursing as it applies to the geriatric population
Knowledgeable of AU/GWVNH Policies and Procedures

SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases

ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability to access and accurately report changes in patient's condition

Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday-Friday
Pay Grade: 5
Salary: $15.00/hour
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
